Dublin isn’t just a city. It’s an atmosphere that awakens all the senses. It’s the sounds of the city on the cobblestone streets and in the parks, the smell of fresh beer, the melodies spilling out of the pubs, and the smiles of the locals that make you feel right at home from the very first moment.

The Irish have an irresistible optimism, a genuine zest for life, and warm hospitality. Whether it’s a passerby who stops with a smile to give you directions, or the group at the pub that invites you to join their table, their positive energy is contagious and chases away even the clouds in the Irish sky!

Here’s what you can do on a 6-day trip to the Irish capital, including a day trip to the main land to get a taste of the Irish countryside at the Cliffs of Moher, Galway and the rugged Atlantic coastline!

Day 1: A first look at the city center and its lush green oases—St. Stephen’s Green & Merrion Square

We started with a stroll through St. Stephen’s Green, a beautiful 22.000 m² park in the heart of the city with picturesque ponds, bridges and lush greenery. On sunny days, you won’t find a single empty spot. Groups of people are everywhere on the grass and benches, chatting, listening to music, reading a book, or eating during their work break! The Park is linked to Ireland’s struggle for independence, as it was the site of the Irish Easter Rising in 1916, which aimed to end British rule and establish an independent Irish republic. Walk over to nearby Merrion Square, a square surrounded by imposing Georgian houses featuring Dublin’s magnificent colorful doors. Stop at the corner to see the famous bronze statue of Oscar Wilde, reclining leisurely on a rock. In the same area, you’ll find the National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology, the National Library of Ireland, and the National Gallery of Ireland. If you want to see them all in one morning, the best route is: St. Stephen’s Green → National Museum (Archaeology) → National Library → National Gallery → Merrion Square. They’re all within a 5–10 minute walk of each other, and you can explore them all comfortably without paying an admission fee!!! Be sure to stop for a coffee along the way!

In the late afternoon, take a stroll through the area south of Dame Street, in the city’s Georgian Quarter. There are plenty of options for food and beer.

In the same area as yesterday, but closer to the river, lies historic Trinity College. Be sure to book a guided tour in advance (students give wonderful tours of the Trinity gardens!). We booked the Trinity Trails Campus Tour and Book of Kells Experience (here: https://www.visittrinity.ie/ ) first thing in the morning. The entire experience takes at least two hours. It was more than worth it! The highlight of the day was, of course, the Book of Kells—a 9th-century illuminated manuscript of the Gospels that takes your breath away with its intricate detail. Entering the “Long Room—Old Library,” with its tall wooden bookcases housing 200.000 of the oldest books, felt like stepping into a scene from Harry Potter. 40 busts of great philosophers, writers, and prominent figures from the Western world and academia on both sides. A massive globe (Gaia) rotates high up on the impressive ceiling! With the same ticket, you also get access to the Red Pavilion, with its captivating digital exhibitions! The day was getting more and more impressive! Don’t miss it!

Just a 5-minute walk away is the O’Connell Bridge, which connects to the north side of the River Liffey. This is the O’Connell Street District, home to the historic General Post Office (GPO)—one of Ireland’s most significant historic buildings, as it served as the headquarters of the 1916 Easter Rising. Feel free to go inside and look around! And if you’re in the mood for shopping, you’ll find all the department stores right here! You’ll also see the tall metal Spire of Dublin. Locals usually just call it “The Spire,” aside from the nicknames they’ve given it!

Late in the afternoon is the perfect time to stroll around Dublin’s most touristy neighborhood, Temple Bar. Aside from the eponymous, bright-red Temple Bar, there are pubs everywhere—with or without live music. The area is so crowded, with such energy and architectural beauty! If you like a lively crowd, have an authentic Guinness while listening to live traditional Irish folk music and chatting with travelers from every corner of the globe. We drank our Guinnesses in a quieter setting at the Vat House Bar. We had some really good fish & chips and Irish stew. We weren’t too impressed with the music. On to the search for an authentic traditional pub the next day!

Day 3: The Futuristic Side of Dublin in the Docklands

If you want to see the side of Dublin that looks straight into the future, a stroll through the Dublin Docklands is a must. The old industrial dock area with its stone mills has been transformed into Europe’s “Silicon Docks,” home to global tech giants. It’s a fascinating blend of old and new. Georgian-style buildings and imposing glass structures, futuristic offices and modern restaurants, young people from every corner of the globe filling the streets during their work breaks, boats, seagulls… The Grand Canal Square, with the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, is bustling with life, especially in the afternoon. It’s also the setting with the red pillars that’s particularly impressive at night when they’re lit up!

Enjoy your coffee with a beautiful view and then walk over to the Samuel Beckett Bridge (designed by architect Santiago Calatrava). It’s the harp-shaped bridge! Cross it over to the sailing ship you see on your left. It’s the Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship, a replica of the ship on which Irish immigrants traveled during the Great Famine. Immediately afterward, you’ll find yourself at the Famine Memorial (the statues on the banks of the Liffey), a harrowing outdoor sculpture on the banks of the River Liffey depicting emaciated people walking toward the harbor, commemorating the approximately one million Irish people who died and the many who were forced to emigrate during the Great Irish Famine (1845–1852).

Be sure to visit EPIC—The Irish Emigration Museum and enjoy a unique exhibition experience. This is no ordinary museum, but an interactive experience. You’ll learn the full story of the millions of Irish people who left their homeland during the Great Famine and how their culture influenced the entire world (from politics to music). When you leave, you’ll feel a deep respect for this people. We couldn’t believe how quickly an hour and a half went by! Of course, you have to book your visit in advance! Check out the special offers too! (HERE: https://epicchq.com/visit/tickets-and-tours/ ). Just a few steps away, admire the Custom House.

The day ends wonderfully at Cobblestone. An authentic Irish pub—just what we were looking for! Take the Luas from George’s Dock to Smithfield, then walk a few minutes, and you’ll see what we mean. The musicians start playing at noon. Every so often, more musicians show up to join the party! Be patient—find a seat or at least a spot to stand—and if you’re a fan of Irish music, you’ll really appreciate it! Just so you know, they don’t serve food there!

No visit to Dublin is complete without a taste of the famous “Water of Life” (Uisce Beatha). We spent the morning at the Jameson Distillery in the Bow St. area. At 10 a.m., we found ourselves diving right into the whiskey! Reservations are required, of course! We booked the Jameson Tasting Experience (HERE: https://www.jamesonwhiskey.com/el-gr/visit-our-distilleries/jameson-bow-street-distillery-tour/ ). The tour of the old distillery was a feast for the senses. It started with a refreshing whiskey cocktail (I’ve never had a better one—with lemonade or with ginger and lime). Our amazing tour guide told us about the company’s history, explained the triple-distillation process that makes Jameson so smooth, and we compared flavors with the Black Barrel as well as the Special Edition (divine!)—and we left feeling very happy!

It’s right next to the Cobblestone Pub, so you can combine the two!

As you leave there, take the opportunity to walk past the Four Courts and cross to the opposite bank via the next bridge (O’Donovan Rossa Bridge). Look ahead up the hill at the magnificent Christ Church Cathedral and walk under the bridge (Cathedral Bridge). To its right is another magnificent building, Dublinia. Walk down Nicholas Street, and in 5 minutes you’ll be at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Park! Everything’s close by! Right next to it are the neighborhoods of Old Dublin (Medieval Dublin/Viking Dublin). Generally, it goes without saying that walking is necerrary if you want to see everything. It’s easier than it sounds, though!

St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, is Ireland’s largest cathedral. This is also where Jonathan Swift is buried. He wrote “Gulliver’s Travels”. People rave about the impressive stained-glass windows, the high ceilings, and the serene atmosphere inside. We didn’t go in! We sat at the café in the beautiful park next to the cathedral and had our coffee before moving on.

On the way to the city center, we passed Dublin Castle (temporarily closed to us). Via Dame Street, we reached the historic St. George’s Arcade (a covered market with small shops), and right around the corner the Castle Lounge with its famous Toastie. We tried it along with some beer. Delicious, but way too much onion! We continued on to Grafton Street. A leisurely stroll down the shopping pedestrian street where there’s always something going on. Musicians, events… That’s also where Riverdance is, if you’re interested in seeing the world’s most famous Irish dance theater show. It’s traditional Irish step dancing with fast, synchronized footwork. You have to book days in advance! Further down, the statue of Mary Mallone draws a crowd for photos.

The penultimate day was dedicated to the very “heart” of the city: the River Liffey. We walked along the river, admiring the contrasts between the city’s old and new architecture. We had a quick coffee on the river deck next to O’Connell Bridge and then crossed the famous Ha’penny Bridge (named after the half-penny that passersby used to pay to cross it). What a unique railing! This is the bridge that leads to the heart of Temple Bar. Head out onto Dame Street and take South William Street. Stop for a nice brunch, coffee, or whatever you’d like at Metro Café. What a lovely bistro with its outdoor tables! Then, via Grafton Street, we arrived at Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre. The building stands out for its Victorian style, with a glass roof, iron bridges, and interior balconies reminiscent of an old shopping arcade.

At the other end of Grafton Street lies College Green, one of the most famous intersections in downtown Dublin. It is an open public space that connects many of the city’s most important landmarks (the main entrance to Trinity College Dublin, the imposing Bank of Ireland building—which was the former Irish Parliament—and the beginnings of Grafton Street, Dame Street, and Westmoreland Street).

We bought souvenirs from Carroll’s, which are everywhere, and called it a day. A full-day excursion is on for tomorrow!

For the last day, we booked a day trip to the west coast of Ireland—and it turned out to be the most breathtaking experience of the trip!

Setting out early in the morning from Dublin, we drove through the Irish countryside toward the Cliffs of Moher. After the good weather we’d had all the previous days, we ended up with a rainy day that didn’t let us see even half a cliff! Even so, the scenery was unique amid the thick fog, wind, and rain. No one was deterred, and we walked all the way to the edge of the cliffs, which rise 200 meters above the Atlantic Ocean. We climbed O’Brien’s Tower, which stands on the headland overlooking the Aran Islands. The Wild Atlantic Way, one of the most spectacular coastal routes in the world, more than made up for it as we drove through the unique landscape of the Burren. The green pastures dotted with cows (so many!!) alternated with picturesque villages, such as the fishing village of Kinvara, castles, and lakes. And then there’s Galway, the cultural capital of western Ireland.

With its festivals in Eyre Square! We strolled through the colorful pedestrian-only alleys of the Latin Quarter with the street musicians (buskers) and around the picturesque harbor. We had cod at McDonagh’s (perfect—big portion—long line to order), had one last Guinness, and enjoyed the must-try ice cream made with Irish milk from Kerry cows at Murphy’s Ice Cream, before heading back to Dublin. The 12-hour tour was very well organized, with an engaging tour guide who kept us thoroughly informed. (Tour Operator: Wild Rover Tours).

From the historic alleys of Dublin to the rugged cliffs of the Atlantic, it’s a trip you’ll never forget. Ireland combines history, culture, and wild natural beauty in a unique way. Dublin doesn’t have to try very hard to win you over. It’s a welcoming, warm city full of stories just waiting to be discovered around every corner. But what impressed us most were the people—with their cheerfulness, humor, and self-deprecating wit, as well as their optimism and calm demeanor!

Sláinte! (Cheers!)

Other popular distilleries: Guinness Storehouse, Teeling Whiskey Distillery. Be sure to book your tickets days in advance.

Don’t be intimidated by the distances or travel times shown on Google Maps. If you walk in a regular pace, you’ll get there in half the time! Everything is very close together!

Use public transportation. We found the buses and the Luas (tram) very convenient. Get a Leap Card or a TFI Leap Visitor Card (a rechargeable card for buses, trams, and trains—HERE: https://www.transportforireland.ie/fares/leap-card/ ) and download the app to check your balance and see where the buses are in real time. Very frequent service everywhere with stop notifications! Be sure to say “thank you” to the driver every time you get off!

Getting into the city from the airport is easy and affordable via the Dublin Express, Dublin Bus, or, if you prefer, a taxi (€35–45 depending on the time and distance). You can book online or at the airport.

General dining overview: food is pricey at sit-down restaurants (expect to pay 40 euros for just two plain servings), coffee is average, and beer is cheap (1 pint (568 ml) of Guinness usually costs: €6.50–€7.50 in most pubs—and cheaper in the neighborhoods), water at €1.50–€2 per half-liter (tap water is safe to drink, though), supermarkets are affordable. In Galway though, everything was much cheaper.

Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need! The Irish are more than willing to help you! You won’t believe their willingness!

Known as the “island of eternal spring,” Madeira is a destination that captivates travelers with its rugged coastlines, lush green mountains, traditional villages, and unique ecosystems that have remained virtually untouched over the centuries.

We spent a week on the island, whose volcanic landscape creates a striking backdrop of deep gorges, countless waterfalls, imposing peaks, and spectacular hiking trails. Get ready for plenty of hiking (many people come here specifically for that) but also for frequent, sudden changes in the weather! It’s surrounded by the ocean, after all!

We stayed in Funchal. Madeira’s vibrant capital combines historic charm with a modern atmosphere. Funchal’s Old Town (dating back to the 15th century) is a living example of revitalization of a historic center. In its cobblestone alleys with their painted doorways, you can experience the coexistence of the authenticity of the past with the creativity of the present. It is a major tourist attraction and the cultural heart of Madeira. What’s not to be missed? The colorful Mercado dos Lavradores market, brimming with local fruits, flowers, spices, and fresh fish. The impressive Monte Palace Tropical Garden, covering 70,000 square meters, features more than 100,000 plant species from various continents, lakes with colorful koi, pagodas, Buddhist sculptures, historic Portuguese tiles (azulejos), and works of art. Inside the garden, visit the Monte Palace Museum, also known for its “Secrets of Mother Nature” collection. The museum offers a fascinating journey into the natural world through exhibits of minerals, precious stones, and petrified wood from various regions of the globe.
The Madeira Botanical Garden, one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Europe, with thousands of plant species and magnificent views as well. The city is built on a hillside, and the elevation difference between the harbor and its highest point offers a unique view of the bay. Take the Funchal Cable Car, which connects the city center to Monte. The ride down the streets of Monte on the famous wicker toboggans (Monte Toboggan Ride) is a truly unique experience!!! Finally, take a leisurely afternoon stroll to Fortaleza de São Tiago, the iconic 17th-century yellow castle on the edge of the Old Town (Zona Velha), right by the sea. There’s a wide selection of cafes and restaurants in the seaside area around the fortress.

If you’d like to see more: Sé Cathedral of Funchal – The historic 15th-century cathedral, one of the island’s most important landmarks… .CR7 Museum – A museum dedicated to Cristiano Ronaldo, who was born in Madeira…. Marina do Funchal – An ideal spot for a stroll by the sea, especially in the afternoon and at sunset.

Rent a car and set out on a tour of the island! A must-visit is Madeira’s living paradise and the island’s greatest natural heritage: the laurel forests, known as Laurisilva or Laurel Forests. This is one of Europe’s most important ecosystems and the largest surviving forest of its kind in the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it is a remnant of the ancient forests that covered much of southern Europe millions of years ago. It is estimated that approximately 90% of its area remains primary forest, home to dozens of endemic plant and animal species.

A special experience was our visit to the Fanal area, where ancient trees with twisted trunks and thick fog create an almost mythical landscape reminiscent of a fairy-tale setting. It’s a “magical” and “otherworldly” experience, especially on days when the forest is shrouded in clouds.

The famous “levadas”—the traditional irrigation channels that crisscross the island—lead you through forests, past waterfalls, and to spots with panoramic views of the Atlantic. Well-organized and with an entrance fee (starting at 4.5 €), they are considered among the most beautiful hiking trails in Europe. We're talking about a lot of people who hike there!

The rest of the island will also impress you.

At Cabo Girão

One of Madeira’s most impressive sights. It’s one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, rising about 580 meters above the Atlantic. Walk along the skywalk—a platform with a glass floor that juts out from the cliff—and enjoy the view of Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, and the ocean. Take photos early in the morning or before sunset, when the light is best and there are usually fewer people. (€5 for ages 12 and under)

In Santana in the north: Casas Típicas de Santana

Santana’s traditional triangular houses are one of Madeira’s most distinctive landmarks. With their thatched roofs and vibrant colors, they offer a glimpse into the island’s rural architecture and cultural heritage. Right next door, there’s also an impressive go-kart track (Karting Faial).

In Câmara de Lobos in the south

The picturesque fishing village of Câmara de Lobos charms visitors with its colorful little harbor, traditional boats, and laid-back atmosphere; it is one of the most authentic places in Madeira, as it was the first settlement on the island after its discovery. A favorite subject for Winston Churchill’s paintings!!

In Calheta

Calheta is known for its beautiful rocky shores, modern marina, and spectacular sunsets. The artificial Praia da Calheta beach, with sand imported from Morocco, is a popular spot!

At Praia do Porto do Seixal

42 km from Funchal, you’ll find Praia do Porto do Seixal, with its black volcanic sand and lush green mountains in the background. Next to it are the natural pools of Piscinas Naturais do Seixal (Poças das Lesmas), formed by ancient volcanic flows. The water temperature is low (around 170 C) all year round—perfect for us Greeks! The Miradouro do Véu da Noiva viewpoint, where you can see the famous waterfall plunging into the sea.

In Porto Moniz

In the northwest of the island, there are more natural pools with unobstructed views of the ocean (which most people prefer), as well as other viewpoints and lush, vibrant nature. Combine this with a visit to the Fanal Forest.

At Pico Ruivo

We climbed Pico Ruivo! At an elevation of 1,862 meters, it’s Madeira’s highest peak. The hike to the summit is one of the most impressive hiking experiences in Madeira. Imagine the view! Above the clouds!

We went on a cruise to watch dolphins and whales (Rota dos Cetáceos). We saw plenty of dolphins, but unfortunately no whales. Be careful about the agreement you make with the tour agency! (Don’t be swayed if they guarantee you’ll see whales. You usually only see dolphins.)

What to eat!

We tried Bolo do Caco—a traditional sweet potato bread, usually served warm with garlic butter.

Espetada— large pieces of beef grilled over charcoal, threaded onto a wooden skewer made of laurel wood (this is the traditional version). However, in most tourist restaurants, it’s usually served on a metal or plain wooden skewer. It’s the island’s most iconic dish. Be sure to ask for it bem passado (well done) because it’s usually served medium rare!!!

Black scabbardfish—fried (caught at a depth of 1,000 m!!!)—often served with banana, an unusual but very popular combination. We weren't impressed!

Tropical fruits grown even in people’s backyards! Maracujá (passion fruit), Pitaia (dragon fruit), Anona (cherimoya), and Madeira bananas (they’re literally everywhere!).

What to drink!

Wine, of course—fortified wine with a unique character and a long history. Most are sweet or semi-sweet. The historic “HENRIQUES & HENRIQUES” wines are renowned for their aging!

Poncha—Madeira’s most famous drink, made with sugarcane spirit, honey, and lemon. That was really strong!

TIPS

Be sure to rent a car. Pick it up at the airport and drive nonstop! That’s what everyone does.

There are admission fees for trails, museums, botanical gardens, wineries, and some beaches. They’re usually inexpensive.

Walk through the city streets. You’ll be amazed by the abundance of striking, exotic plants, unusual trees, and flowers you’ve never seen before. The Portuguese brought them here during their numerous maritime explorations, and the mild climate helped them thrive. You’ll understand when you see flowers measuring 30–50 centimeters.

Suggested itinerary: Funchal → Cabo Girão → Seixal → Porto Moniz → Fanal → return via the western side. It’s one of the most beautiful day trips in Madeira.

In May, there’s a flower festival with many events all over the island!

Madeira isn’t just a vacation island; it’s a destination where nature takes center stage. From primeval forests and exotic gardens to natural history museums and volcanic landscapes, the island offers a rare balance between adventure, culture, and complete immersion in the natural environment. For those seeking a European destination that’s off the beaten path, Madeira offers an unforgettable experience. A destination for every season! (Well, for us, anyway—because there’s only one season there… it’s always spring!)

We arrived in Acragantas (its Greek name), Agrigento (a super musical name!), crossing the island from north (Palermo) to south, having the opportunity to get to know the inland with its endless fields of grain. Countless bales of straw scattered over vast expanses. A very artistic sight! Our visit had the sole purpose of touring the archaeological site, the "Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples". We left the modern city for another visit!

So let’s meet Acragantas, in southern Sicily, one of the most brilliant cities of Magna Grecia. It was founded in 582 BC by colonists from Gela. The "most beautiful city of mortals", as the poet Pindar called it, was a rich city with great power, home to artists, philosophers and important men of history. So, the number one reason of your visit is the "Valley of the Temples" (La Valle dei Templi). You will be impressed! Take note on the the temperatures and if it’s too hot, make sure you are properly equipped! You will need considerable time to explore the vast area amidst the olive and almond trees, between the sea and the modern city of Agrigento. Here people really struggled to save the large number of surviving temples. You will see memorial plaques with the names of those who fought for it. Since 1997 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 1,300-hectare archaeological site includes 10 Doric temples, 3 sanctuaries, a necropolis, hydraulic works, fortifications …… and many more. What do we suggest you do?

Start from the top of the archaeological site and go down the hill. First, stop at the Temple of Hera Lacinia (Tempio di Hera Lacinia), standing at an impressive location, at the top of the hill, with 24 surviving columns and obvious traces of the fire of 406 BC, when it was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Further down, with the ruins of the Greek Walls (Mura Greche) on your left, walk along the Via Sacra to the famous Temple of Concordia (Tempio della Concordia), one of the best preserved in the world. It was adopted as the logo for the UNESCO emblem. Its peristyle consists of 34 columns, on a base with 4 steps instead of the 3 that the temples in Greece had. Continue in front of the Villa Aurea to the Temple of Hercules (Tempio di Ercole), the oldest of all (6th century BC) with 8 of the 38!!! original columns standing today. To the east of the temple you can see the ruins of a large altar. In Sicily, Hercules was worshipped as a god and not as a demigod!

Enter the area of the Temple of Olympian Zeus (Tempio di Zeus Olimpico) (5th century). It was the largest in the entire West (113x56m). On its façade, instead of columns, stood Telamons, naked giants 7.60 meters high, who like Atlases held the roof on their shoulders. One of them in life size was in the space in front of us standing upright so that we could get a sense of its enormous size.

In a large area below is the complex of sanctuaries of the Chthonian Deities (Demeter and Persephone) and within it the Temple of the Dioscuri (Tempio dei Dioscuri) with its 4 remaining columns (it has become a symbol of the city).

You need two hours for this tour. However, there’s much more to see at the archaeological park on the side below the hill with the temples. It is the ancient city of Akragantas, with the Agora and the Vouleuterion, the Regional Archaeological Museum, the Necropolis and temples outside the walls, but also the Garden of Kolymbetra.

Organize yourself according to the time you have to spend and enjoy your experience on an immersive journey through history!

¬ There are 2 entrances. Porta V (east) and Porta Giunone (west) with more parking spaces. We started from there! In between them there a 2 km. distance.

¬ The best time is early in the morning. Fewer people, less heat. Minimal shade in the area!

¬ The ticket costs €17 (general admission). We got in for free with a Greek free-entry teacher ID!

¬ See here a useful digital map of the area as well as updated information about tickets and opening hours of the area:

Quite a few conquerors passed through this land!

Start the tour by walking through Porta Nuova, a 15th-century gate with impressive sculptures, a monument to the victory against the Tunisians. It is located next to the Palace of the Normans (Palazzo dei Normanni) which you will see later, making a stop in the beautiful park in front of it. An Arab building of the 9th century, characteristic of the cultural diversity of Sicily that was expanded and decorated by the Normans in the later years. Byzantines and Spaniards also overran the area. Visit the Capella Palatina chapel for the unique Byzantine mosaics.

Head to the Palermo Cathedral (Cattedrale di Palermo), another example of a mix of architectural styles. What about Gothic, Norman, Byzantine and Arabic influences? You will discover them in this magnificent building outside and inside. Take some time to explore all its corners, see the unique mosaics, wood carvings, royal tombs and the underground crypt with the sarcophagi. Don't miss the heliometer on the floor! Before leaving, "climb" to the roof for a panoramic view of Palermo!

Next, make your way to Quattro Canti (Piazza Vigliena), the landmark square in the heart of Palermo's historic center. An excellent example of Baroque architecture, the "Four Corners" as its name suggests, are perfectly symmetrical, defining the corners of four ancient districts at the intersection of two main streets. The rich symbolism in its design makes it unique. Each of the four facades is divided into four levels, each with its own representation of the cultural and religious life of Palermo. At each base, you can see one of the four seasons symbolizing the cyclical nature of life, as well as a figure for each element of nature (earth, water, fire and air). On the middle tier, sit each of the four Spanish kings who ruled Palermo during the 17th century and on the upper tier the 4 female patron saints of the four historic districts of Palermo. Above them all, the royal coats of arms! We were staring up and around for a while… speechless!

Next stop at the Teatro Massimo square, one of the largest opera houses in Europe. A meeting point for many, the impressive building with its imposing size is known for the high-level performances it hosts. If you're interested, you can also visit its interior or possibly watch a performance. Horse carriages are waiting in the square for a stroll around the city in a different style.

That’s all fine but you will also find Sicilian cuisine at its best in Palermo. Great choices of street food like “arancini” and “cannoli” and many more as well as traditional dishes like “pasta alla norma” with tomato sauce, eggplant, basil and ricotta or an authentic “caponata”. The pasta here (be careful not to ask for macaroni as we Greeks refer to all kinds of pasta – it will be remarked!) is often handmade and in any case cooked al dente). Pizza will be super wherever you eat it, as well as seafood dishes.

There is still much more to see and do depending on your interests. Do some exploring for the joy of being a traveler!

TIPS

Many restaurants are usually closed for siesta (usually 3:00 PM-6:00 PM)! This is an issue. And some attractions too! So, see that you plan your schedule and check the hours!

Most locals don't speak English. However, you will surely find a way to communicate. Everyone is very willing and helpful!

All the products of the land (vegetables, citrus fruits, etc.) are extra tasty here since they are grown in the fertile volcanic soils of the island.

Approximately 1,500 round houses with conical roofs, in gray and white, compose a unique setting. The history making your tour even more interesting. They are the Trulli, stone dwellings, remarkable examples of dry-stone construction, unique in the Puglia region!

It is said that the inhabitants of the region, in the mid-15th century, in order to avoid a harsh law of the kingdom of Naples that taxed constructions with binder material, chose to build these houses like beehives, with limestone slabs and without any connection between them, while on the roofs they placed thinner slabs in circular rings. This way they could easily dismantle them when the tax collectors came and reassemble them when they left!

On the roofs you will see painted symbols in white that bring luck or protect against the evil eye. In the shops you will buy local products and souvenirs, you will taste the focaccia delicacies at the square, in the narrow streets you will see Trullo Siamese and the Trullo Sovrano (a rare example of a two-storey building) which operates as a museum and at the Vista Panoramica de Trulli point (next to the church of Santa Lucia, as you reach the square on the upper right) you will admire the panoramic view. Stroll around seeking for the perfect photo! Quite challenging!!!

At the base of each roof there was a specific stone that if you pulled it out, the house would be dismantled! They say that within half an hour the whole village could be demolished.

Alberobello means “beautiful tree”. The area was overgrown with oak trees and generally very forested.

You can feel the unique experience of staying in a dome, since most domes are used as tourist accommodations and shops rather than for residences.

We ate very delicious focaccia in various versions at Focacceria La Lira (https://www.instagram.com/lalirafocacceria/ ) at the square!

You can always take a tram of course! A pedestrian friendly city, supporting sustainable, environmentally friendly activities with the smallest possible ecological footprint.

By doing so, cars are not allowed to enter in the historic center unless they are electric or at least hybrid vehicles. Ours was a hybrid and we parked it at Parking Ramen as close as possible to the center, two blocks from Saint Michael’s Bridge.

Well, start on foot! On the right before the bridge, you see Saint Michael’s Church and as soon as you step foot on the homonymous bridge you have a 360-degree field of view in a magical setting. From this point you can see all 3 towers of the city in a row, the river Lys and the Graslei and Korenlei quays along the canal with many restaurants and small shops, people strolling or sitting and enjoying the wonderful view of the historic buildings. And of course, taking pictures of every corner of the impressive houses on the banks! Here you can book for a the water route with various types of boats if you choose to see the highlights of Ghent by boat on a guided tour.

Continue straight. On your left there’s a magnificent building, The Post. Once the city's historic post office, today hosts a shopping center and a luxury hotel on the upper floors. We are talking about masterpiece facades, decorated with about 100 statues and coats of arms along with the 51-meter tower with the unobstructed view.

In front of you is the Church of St. Nicholas (Sint-Niklaaskerk) with its tall bell tower – a trademark of the city on Korenmarkt Square, opposite The Post. Built of Tournai blue stone, it is considered one of the most beautiful examples of the Scheldt Gothic style with unique works of art (paintings, stained glass…) inside. Admission is free, open until 4:00 PM. Proceed with the church on your left, take a rest maybe at the little park behind it.

Now you tell me where to look first! Straight ahead is the Belfry of Ghent (Belfry), on the left is the futuristic Stadshal or Market Hall and if you look further into the square is the City Hall (Ghent City Hall). You are at Sint-Baafplein Square. The Stadshal is a clear example of a peculiar combination of modern architecture in a medieval environment that caused, no need to say, reactions. We loved it. It proves that the city is alive! Climb up the Belfry, with the 1913 manual mechanism and the dragon guarding the city, for a panoramic view of the city. (There is also an elevator from the 1st floor). During peak periods, register and secure your entry HERE https://tickets1belfort.gent.be/Exhibitions/Register

Just behind Belfry is the Cathedral of St. Bavo (Sint Baafskathedraal) with its 40 bells. It is considered a world-famous masterpiece of Gothic architecture. There you will see: the Ghent Altarpiece (or: “The Pilgrimage of the Secret Lamb”), a multi-faceted work by the Hubert and Jan van Eyck brothers (15th century). Take your time to observe the 12 separate panels and the story they tell! Explore the impressive interior, the stained glass windows and sculptures. For the complete experience you will need a ticket. See here: https://www.sintbaafskathedraal.be/en/buy-tickets/ There are also stairs here for the brave ones (444 steps for a view). Next to it is the very beautiful building of the Royal Dutch Theatre. Walk along and take the road behind the City Hall (Hoogpoost str.). As you head back towards the bridges, take a look at the alley with the graffiti (Graffiti Street). Cool graffiti in a narrow alley. Every inch an explosion of colors. All its walls are free for artistic expression!

You have walked in a circle around the centre and you find yourself on the Grasbrug bridge. As soon as you cross the river, turn right. Stop for coffee/beer/snack at Et Alors café just opposite the Design Museum. And after that off to Gravensteen Castle, a symbol of the power of the Flemish comets, the only one with a moat around it. Visiting the castle takes time. Inside, each room tells a different story, from the ancient weapon displays to the dark, dramatic dungeon. The view from the top is amazing. If you don't have time, take a walk around it. There are nice shops area as well. Try the local delicacy, cuberdon, (conical, purple sweets) in one of them.

The city is very well organized. Check their website for information and don't take anything for granted https://visit.gent.be/en

Make sure you have the right to drive your vehicle in Ghent before you go! SEE HERE: https://visit.gent.be/en/low-emission-zone-ghent

For your visit to Gravensteen Castle you will need to make a reservation for the time of visit. There are terms and restrictions. https://tickets1gravensteen.stad.gent/Exhibitions/Register

You will find many options for activities/tours HERE: https://www.getyourguide.com/el-gr/belfry-of-ghent-l123440/

Apart from visiting the castle, the entire tour we described in the Historic centre of Ghent was done in one day, comfortably and without rushing, since everything is very close to each other.

If you want some museums and other attractions in your tour, there’s a great choice for all tastes.

As pleasant though it may be, preparing a trip is also a little stressful when it comes to booking a room in a hotel. Something which is very important for the progress and the success of the trip. What is that one should know well in order to limit the possible misunderstandings or unpleasant surprises?

How do you evaluate the hotels?

What does it mean when we say that a hotel is a “five-star hotel”? Who decides what will be the class of the hotel we visit? What’s the difference between a “five-star” hotel and a four one? The answer is more complicated than you might think.

The truth is that there is no international standard classification of hotels, at least not yet. With stars, diamonds, or keys, that means that each country uses its own system so we cannot be sure what ever each category matches with. Can, for example, a 3-star hotel in one country be better than a four in another?

The attempt to harmonize rules in recent years, led to the creation of a common European system of assessment, the Hotelstars Unionpoy, that came into force in 2010 in some countries and later in more (Greece (2013)

The “Hotelstars” system of the European Union is based on a classification system with five stars and a Superior sign for an extra flag. Instead of a minimum size room and shower facilities (e.g. a bathtub into a four-star hotel), there is a list of criteria with 21 skills, including 270 items, where some are mandatory in order to get a star and others optional. The rating is the following:

For an indicative list of criteria look here: (https://www.hotelstars.eu/greece/criteria/)

In fact, what you need to know is this: In each case the hotels are evaluated based on the comforts and the services they offer, but also the quality of these. Before you travel be sure to check if the hotel you selected offers services that you consider necessary. Moreover, the problem is not to be in need of something. The surprises of extras that weren't expected are always welcome!!! And something else ... ... A hotel with a star doesn't mean that it will be dirty or neglected. It may just mean that it’s a small or medium building with minimum staff e.g. a family business.

Make sure well before you make the booking that the rooms are clean. How? By reading as many customer reviews of the hotel as possible emphasizing on the latest. Do the same with the other amenities: breakfast, etc.

As for the types of rooms there are differentiations.

There are 2 kinds of categorization of rooms you might encounter in a hotel or accommodation. One is the kind of room (e.g. standard, studio, deluxe etc) and the second the number of people that can be accommodated per case: (single (single), double (double), triple (triple), quads (quadruple).

The STANDARD rooms of a hotel usually represent the basic room type a hotel is offering, including the basic amenities.

The SUPERIOR rooms (some hotels use the term executive) are defined as better (superior) from the standard and usually outweigh the standards in size, quality furnishings and service. A further differentiation that is quite common among superior and standard rooms is the provided view from the room.

The DELUXE rooms are the third and the superior category of rooms you can find in a hotel which usually excel in size, furnishings, services etc. from all rooms.

Apart from the rooms, several hotels provide suites (suites). The suites are divided into JUNIOR SUITES and SUITES. The Junior Suite is usually a larger room with separate living room where in some cases the bedroom is separated by a door and others with some separator which separates the two spaces completely. The suite (SUITE) which is usually a fairly large room which has 2 separate rooms (1 bedroom and 1 living room) which are separated by a door. Many hotels define as suite any room that has a sofa or a sofa bed so you need to take this into consideration while selecting.

The Studios are rooms which are similar in layout to other Junior Suites, with much simpler rooms though and a kitchen/kitchenette along with cooking equipment. This type of room is mostly encountered often in lower class hotels, rooms and beachfront accommodation.

The Apartments are similar rooms with Studios and feature 1 or 2 bedrooms, whose number is usually stated in the room description (e.g. 1 bedroom apartment, 2 bedroom apartment) and a living room.

It is important to note that the above descriptions apply generally but in many cases the interpretation of the above terms depends on the hotel, its category and location. So, for example, a standard room at a five-star hotel might offer a better service than a superior 3 -star hotel.

Regarding to the second categorization in (single, double, triple, quads (quadruple), to add that there is also differentiation between double room (double room with a double bed) and twin room (twin room with two single beds). If the hotel cannot guarantee you that the double room will have specific types of beds, then in the room type description it will be indicated by the term “double/twin”. You may indicate your preference but the service depends on the availability of the date you make the check in.

In a double room you might encounter some variations such as: a double room for single use which in fact is a double room which is offered at a lower price (intermediary usually between standard single and standard double room) for exclusive use by 1 person.

My opinion is that the stars do not guarantee the atmosphere, charm or other subjective criteria that make you remember for a long time afterwards how much you enjoyed your stay at a hotel. That's why, whenever possible, consult friends whose judgment you trust, and they have stayed in a hotel at the place you plan to visit. It is safer! And then tell US , please! That's why we're here! To spread the word ...!

The snake shaped uphill road on the slopes of Mount Lakmos, leads us to Sirrako. Hooked on the slope and merged with the landscape. A stop for panoramic photos on the ring road that leads to the upper entrance of the village is a must. Cars can’t enter the village, so park your vehicle at the open space before the first houses or in the area before the stone gate. There is also the central entrance at the low point of the village if you prefer! And here starts the walking on the cobblestone alleys! All with a considerable incline, so mind the shoes you wear! Along the way, I realized how essential a stave is and why all the residents were using one!

In the central square, laid out in levels, young and old gather. Some sit on the terraces under the dome of the impressive fountain "Gura" (“mouth” in Vlach), others in the forecourt of the church of Agios Nikolaos (gold-woven Russian epitaph and excellent wood-carved iconostasis). Everyone speaks Vlach! I'm eavesdropping to catch some words, but... in vain! The younger ones meet on the lower level of the square where there are also 2 tavernas. Taste the traditional dishes!

Our guest house (Casa calda) is dreamy on the highest point of the settlement, with its courtyard, its stone arches, its view! Carved stone on the walls and slate roofs of all the houses in the village rebuilt according to the local traditional architecture.

The cobblestones climb the slope, pass through all the doors creating a picturesque setting. Every corner is a frame! I spontaneously think how much effort was needed to keep them so well preserved since the means are lack due to the physiology of the place. We take the downhill alley towards the center of the settlement. Apart from the main square there is the statue square. We walk through all the narrow streets; we enter the house of K. Krystallis (today a museum-library). An enthusiastic guide welcomes us and speaks passionately about the history of the place and all the culture and daily life of the area. Stop at the Folklore Museum of Avdikos and the old school (a guesthouse nowadays) which stands out in its place due to its size. Enjoy coffee or food in its yard (we went late in the afternoon)
Although the permanent residents are around 50, the village comes alive during summer, as we were told. A big festival is held here on August 15th.

Next outing the Chrousia gorge which was the Greek-Turkish border from 1881 to 1912. It separates the neighbor settlements of Kalarrites and Sirrako. You can see the neighbor across the street, but you have to run the miles to reach it. 3 km on foot, 25 by car and a 45' ride. If you drive though, you have a bonus! You have a chance to visit the monastery of Kipina (Assumption of the Virgin Mary) on the way to Kalarrites. See beforehand that it’s open to visitors because it's not to be missed! Adhered to the wild rock overlooking the gorge of the Kalarritikos river, it is impressive inside and out. Inside the cave, in the church, 17th century hagiographies are preserved until today. What strength did people have to build what our eyes see! (TIP: If it's winter, ask for the key in the village, in Kipina.)

After a 4' drive, further on you meet the point where you can enter the gorge, stop at Kouisas Bridge. Do so! At a short distance (10' walk) there is an old water mill that functions as a refreshment stand. Cool your feet in the water of the Kalarritikos stream (if you can stand the cold temperature!). And then head uphill again at 1200m. for Kalarrites. Cars are not allowed here as well.

It was once a village of silversmiths with their workshops manufacturing famous ecclesiastical silverware and jewelry. It is said Bulgari started his business here! Samples can be seen at the Museum of Silversmithing (old school building). But they also excelled with wool, capes and woven fabrics. All this from 1750 to 1821. Agios Nikolaos church stands (1480) high up the hill and there are stone fonts with names all around like “Nessis” (at the square), “Goura”, “Fitros” and “Parashis” with the vaulted dome. Walk through the narrow streets with the old mansions of the rich merchants who once lived here and at the square enter the house-museum of A. Golfinopoulou. The family still lives in the 1872 mansion and guides visitors to old times through the wealth of exhibits.

Off to "Akanthos" tavern directly across the street, a little higher up from the square. Napoleon and his wife prepare special local dishes in the oldest department store in the area. It functions as a grocery store-cafe-tavern-shoe shop all at the same time being almost 200 years old! It’s a time travel, you'll see!

Now, if you stay longer, spend a day at the villages on the opposite slope. Pramada, Agnanda, Tsopela and Melissourgoi. You can easily reach the bridge of Plaka as well. Estimate the distance at 2-3 minutes’ drive per a kilometer.

Set off for Pramada, drive past them and head for Anemotrypa cave. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to enter for a tour. But you check it out and visit! They say it’s totally worth it! Entrance fee costs 3 euros (tel. 26590 61516, 6958054441).

Plaka bridge was our reward! Built in 1866, it is the largest single-arched bridge in the Balkans, with a span of 40 meters, a height of 19 meters and an opening at the top of 3.2 meters. It was reconstructed in 2019. See that you have to turn right before entering the settlement. Otherwise, the road will take you to the other side of the river and you will have to walk a long way on the path to the end of the bridge. However, you will be compensated by the panoramic view! Arachthos is full in clay and the water is grey when it rains. Go in for a natural spa! Many choose to go down the river in boats. And a nice refreshment bar operates in the building of the old customs office next to the highest bridge in the Balkans.

If it's Sunday and you fancy a table by the window, you need to be provident and book one on time. Note that I have never seen a village with so many visual arts on every wall, corner and square. And everything taken care of. Well done!

“Horizons of Tzoumerka” resort, next to Tsopelas settlement was our next visit for a coffee. Fill your eyes with amazing nature views. As if entering some poster... you feel like running on the grass with the peaks of Tzoumerka in the background. Sweets and coffees arrive on the terrace! Enjoy!!!

There are more to see and do in the area depending the time and the type of tripper you are. The place can easily meet all nature lovers’ needs!

Even if you don't need a passport for border checks within the Schengen area, it is still always highly recommended to take a passport or ID card with you, so you can prove your identity if needed (if stopped by police, boarding a plane, etc.). Schengen EU countries have the possibility of adopting national rules obliging you to hold or carry papers and documents when you are present on their territory.

Ensure that you have either your ID or passport in your possession when travelling to these countries. Also bear in mind that even under normal circumstances you may be required to produce one of these documents.

In addition to the Vatican, San Marino (Italy) and Monaco (in France) that are not EU members but have no border controls and valid for entry into those that apply to members of the Schengen area.

When travelling to or from a non-Schengen country you must show a valid ID or passport. Before travelling, check what documents you must have to travel outside your home country and to enter the non-Schengen country you plan to visit.

If you are a non-EU national wishing to visit or travel within the EU, you will need a passport:

valid for at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave the EU country you are visiting,

which was issued within the previous 10 years,

and possibly a visa. You should apply for a visa from the consulate or embassy of the country you are visiting. If your visa is from a Schengen area country, it automatically allows you to travel to the other Schengen countries as well. If you have a valid residence permit from one of those Schengen countries, it is equivalent to a visa. You may need a national visa to visit non-Schengen countries.

Border officials in EU countries may ask for other supporting documents such as an invitation letter, proof of lodging, return or round-trip ticket. For the precise requirements contact the local consular services of the EU country in question.

There are a number of countries whose nationals do not need a visa to visit the EU for three months or less. The list of countries whose nationals require visas to travel to the United Kingdom or Ireland differs slightly from other EU countries.

Travel documents for minors

In addition to their own valid passport or ID card, all children travelling:

alone; or

with adults who are not their legal guardian; or

with only one parent

may need an extra (official) document signed by their parents, second parent or legal guardian(s) authorising them to travel.

There are no EU rules on this matter, each EU country decides whether or not it requires such documents. Check, before the child travels, the requirements of the country you are travelling both from and to:

Choose country

Bear in mind that, even where a country does not require minors to carry such an authorisation to leave or enter its territory, other countries they transit through may still ask them to show one.

When travelling by air it is highly recommended that you check with the airlines beforehand as many require such authorisations and have their own specific forms for this purpose.

Driving licence recognition and validity

If your driving licence is issued by an EU country, it's recognised throughout the EU.

So if you move to another EU country, you won't usually have to exchange your licence. You can drive in your new country on your current licence as long as:

it is valid

you are old enough to drive a vehicle of the equivalent category

it is not suspended or restricted and has not been revoked in the issuing country.

The categories AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, B1, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE are also recognised in other EU countries.

Check the rules and exceptions on driving licence renewal and exchange when moving to another EU country.

Standard format

Since 2013, all driving licences issued in the EU have a standard format – a plastic, credit card-sized photocard, with better security features.

You can still use your old-style licence, but you will be issued with the new format when you renew your existing licence and in any case at the latest by 2033.

Before you travel see that your luggage complies with the regulations. Check with your airline the rules for how many bags you may check in, the carry-on baggage allowance and for possible related charges depending on the ticket type.

Carry-on luggage

As a general guide, carry-on luggage should have a maximum weight of 8 kg and dimensions of 55 cm length X up to 40cm height X up to 25cm width. These dimensions include wheels, handles, side pockets, etc. You can have 2 pieces of hand luggage (1 carry-on bag and 1 backpack), the second of which is usually free.

Important Remark:

Due to the limited baggage store you may be prompted for the following:

To deliver your carry-on baggage for carriage in the hold of the aircraft, even if it is within the allowable limits, when necessary. This process will be done when you board the aircraft, you will be given a receipt, there will be no transfer fee and you will receive it from the baggage belt at the airport of your destination. In this case, you should take care to remove from your baggage items unsuitable for transportation in the hold (e.g. laptop, cameras etc.) before you hand it in.

To place your hand luggage or laptop bag or your own bag or bags with purchases from airport shops, underneath the front seat you.

If your carry-on is judged oversized when placed in the special context of measurement (baggage sizers) available at all outlets of departure, you will be asked to hand it for transportation in the hold of the aircraft. In this case, you will be given a receipt and you will have to collect it from the baggage belt at the airport of your destination but there will be a corresponding charge in addition to free transport, depending on your ticket. You should take care to remove from your baggage items unsuitable for transportation in the hold (e.g. laptop, cameras etc.) before you deliver.

CAUTION!!!!! It is prohibited to transport objects in carry-ons that can cause injury or bodily harm. In this category belong:

Weapons and generally every object that is, or appears to be capable of firing missile or to injure such as: components of firearms and imitation firearms replicas as air guns games and all kinds of guns and weapons with pellet guns, launchers of each kind, spear guns and stun device, and electric shocks.

Sharp objects of any kind and material, which is able to injure, as: pocketknives, daggers, knives, axes, arrows, scalpels, scissors, and generally any professional or home tool, knitting needles, manicure sets, etc..

Any non-sharp object that is capable of injuring, such as: sports clubs, rods, sticks and all kinds of rackets, paddles, billiard cues, fishing rods, martial arts equipment.

If we carry such objects, they will be withheld from the airport and the company does not bear responsibility for their delivery to the passengers, nor is there a question of compensation in case of loss. The transport of such objects is only allowed in checked baggage.

Transport of liquids in hand luggage of passengers

In accordance with the new European regulation, the quantities of products in liquid form that passengers are allowed to carry in the cabin of the aircraft is limited (e.g. water, drinks and beverages, jellies, creams, ointments, paste, lotions, perfumes, shampoos, hair lacquers, mascara, lip-gloss, toothpaste, shaving foam, spray, wet contact lenses, oil and other objects of similar texture). The rule does not apply to checked in baggage.

Below you will find useful information and guidance for better and faster service to airports which apply this regulation.

What is allowed to transfer in your hand luggage:

Liquids in containers with a capacity of up to 100 ml per container. These packages should fit in one transparent re-sealable plastic bag, maximum capacity 1 litre. Only one such bag is allowed per passenger, which should be closed and will be delivered separately to control hand luggage for examination.

Liquid medicines and food items that you need during your trip may be transported in hand luggage. But you may be asked to prove that they are necessary for the journey.

Items purchased from airport shops (Duty-free). These items should be placed in a special sealed bag, which will be available from these stores and which should not be opened before you checking in your baggage, otherwise the contents may be confiscated at the checkpoint. If you are going to make transit to another EU airport, as well as in Norway, Switzerland and Iceland do not open the bag before the checkpoint at the airport of transit or in the final airport, if you pass more than one transit station. All these liquids are additional to the quantities tendered for in resealable plastic bag.

Some travelers take extra precautions with checked bags–some expensive:

To quickly locate their bags at luggage claim, they may fasten flashers/beepers to the outside that they can trigger by a device they carry.

Others may place GPS tracking devices inside their luggage that indicate its location–helpful if lost or misrouted.

If your baggage is not delivered at baggage claim, it is important to file a report to the airline or to the relevant airport services before leaving the airport.

For more accurate and up to date information you are kindly requested to visit the official sites of the the relevant airlines.
